A history of La Gorce

La Gorce was conceptualized by developers Carl G. Fisher, John S. Collins, and brothers J.E. Lummus and John Newton Lummus, Sr., who transformed Miami Beach from mangrove forests into a summer destination.

Fisher named La Gorce and La Gorce Island after John Oliver La Gorce, the former editor and president of National Geographic who founded the Miami Beach Aquarium in the 1920s. The La Gorce Country Club was built in 1927 and only added to the area’s desirability with invitation-only membership and high-end amenities.
