A short history of Allison Island

The origins of Allison Island can be traced back to the early 1920s with entrepreneurs Carl G. Fisher and John S. Collins, who sought to develop the swamplands of Miami Beach into a tropical retreat for affluent buyers and tourists from around the world. Developers dredged the surrounding waters and used reclaimed sand to build over 20 artificial islands on Biscayne Bay. These include Allison Island.

Fisher named the island after entrepreneur Jim Allison of the Allison Engineering Company and Indianapolis 500. Allison suffered from poor health and envisioned a resort-style hospital that promoted wellness and recreation. The result was a paradisiacal community with some of the finest homes in South Florida.
